2024 Tapia STEM CCS Camp at Jackson State University

The inaugural STEM CCS Camp at Jackson State University (JSU) in conjunction with the Tapia Center at Rice University was a huge success. The camp occurred the week of June 3-7 and is the latest iteration of the successful ExxonMobil-sponsored camps at Rice and Southern Universities held in past years.

At JSU, EMPCo’s Baton Rouge Area Supervisor Ruben Jean kicked things off for more than 60 campers, who spent the rest of the week learning about carbon and carbon management through hands-on project-based learning, team building and problem solving.

Many thanks to the ExxonMobil employees, which included Denbury representatives, who participated in the camp as mentors and judges of the students’ CCS presentations at the end of the week. Their engagement makes such a difference in these camps and leaves a lasting and meaningful impression on the students.

EMPCo President and Americas Fuels Operations Manager Steve Yatauro was on hand to engage with students and teachers. We were also thrilled to host several stakeholders from the office of Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves, the Mississippi Legislature, the Mississippi Manufacturer’s Association, the Mississippi Business Council, Jackson State University and AccelerateMS.

More than 500 students from 55 school districts across Texas and Louisiana participated in these camps last year. Nearly 1,000 students and educators are expected to participate this summer; more than 65% will come from communities near our existing or proposed pipeline routes.
